Knitting Two Socks at Once on Two Circular Needles

knitted ballerina socks

Andrew Perris

These incredibly cute ballerina socks will keep tiny toes warm and pretty. Shiny pink satin ribbons are crisscrossed softly around the ankle and tied in a bow, so that baby can't lose them while practicing those high kicks when out in the stroller or relaxing in the crib. Even so, it might be useful to knit a spare pair—just in case.

You Will Need:
Pair of size 3 (3.25 mm) needles
Pair of size 6 (4 mm) needles
1(1: 1) 2 oz (50 g) ball light worsted knitting yarn in color A (white)
1(1: 1) 2 oz (50 g) ball light worsted knitting yarn in color B (pink)
2 1/2 yds (2.3 m) of ¼ in (6 mm) wide pink satin ribbon
Bodkin

To Fit Sizes:
0–3 months: chest 16 in (41 cm)
3–6 months: chest 18 in (46 cm)
6–12 months: chest 20 in (51 cm)
Note: The socks are designed to fit an average-sized baby

Gauge:
22 stitches and 30 rows to 4 in (10 cm), measured over stockinette stitch, using size 6 (4 mm) needles
Note: The actual weight of the finished pair of socks is 1 oz (25 g)—you can use this weight to calculate how much yarn you will need if using leftovers from other projects

Ballerina Socks (make 2 alike):
Using size 3 (3.25 mm) needles and col A, cast on 27 (31: 35) sts.
Work in k1, p1 rib for 3 in (8 cm), ending with a ws row.
Next row: rib 17 (20: 23) sts, turn, rib 7 (9: 11) sts.
With rs facing, work 6 (6: 8) rows in rib on the rem 7 (9:11) sts.
Change to size 6 (4 mm) needles and col B, and cont in st st for 2 (4: 4) more rows.

Instep Shaping:
With rs facing, break off yarn, and rejoin col B to beg of instep. Pick up and knit 8 (10: 12) sts along side of instep, then work across 7 (9: 11) sts at toe.
Now pick up and knit 8 (10: 12) sts along other side of instep, then work across sts on needle.
There are now 43 (51: 59) sts in total.
Work in st st for 7 (9: 9) rows.

Sole Decrease:
With rs facing, *k1, k2tog); rep from * to last 1 (0: 2) sts, then k to end.
There are now 29 (34: 40) sts.
Purl 1 row.
Next row: *k1, k2tog; repeat from * to last 2 (1: 1) sts, then k to end.
There are now 20 (23: 27) sts.
Purl 1 row.
Bind off all sts in rib, and fasten off securely.

Sewing Together:
Use matching colored yarns to join sole and leg seams.

Cut the length of ribbon in half, and thread one piece through each of the socks in a crisscross pattern over the insteps, using the picture as a guide. The ribbons can be tied around the baby's ankles in pretty bows.
